Troubleshooting the ignition system.

Last time we discussed how magnetic fields cause current in wires. The current is then used to operate the spark plugs.

We will now discuss how to troubleshoot this system.

First of all, the system consists of:

– Flywheel with magnet

– Magneto with main coil and switching coil

– On/off wire

-Spark plug and spark plug wire.

That’s all.

In the old days you had a switching circuit called points, but I won’t bore you with that. I have several old engines that have points. (If you’re really interested in the points, I’ll write an article about fixing these problems…but not today.)

So what’s the problem?

The problem is that I was driving a go-kart… my chain blew… it rattled hard… the engine still ran until I shut it off. I replaced the chain and now it won’t start.

What to do? Cry? Uh… no…

First, take a look at the system. So the symptom must be that the engine is not running

– No gas

– Flooded (too much gas)

– No compression

– No Spark

-The switch is off!

So yeah I checked.. it’s gas. (check!)

The engine has good resistance and compression (no thrown rods, no loose valves, everything is tight…) (check)

Yes, I checked it was ON! I also removed the trip wire from the switch near the engine. Still nothing. (check)

We pulled out the spark plug and tested the spark:

No spark:

Possible causes of the absence of a spark are:

Defective spark plug (i.e. short circuit due to ash content, broken insulator, too much gas on the spark plug)

Or a faulty ignition mechanism

I cleaned the plug well. I used a different plug…

Note: But you know what you should do first? You should take the plug wire and try it towards the engine. Well, I tried that too: no spark.

It doesn’t look good here… What do we do next?

This is where things start to fall apart.

Understand that the system includes a flywheel, so we need to access it and check if the flywheel is ok.

By “okay” I mean the following:

-Is there more magnet in it?

– Did he get hurt? (very unlikely) Check with a screwdriver: does it hold? (make sure there is a magnet)

The next critical thing is to check the keyway. 8 times out of 10 the key breaks. This can happen due to sudden engine stops. A sudden stop can occur for a variety of reasons, such as a broken chain seizing the engaged clutch. An instantaneous shock load can be input to the system.

Another way an engine can suddenly stall is if the rod has blown internally or if the engine has run out of oil (seized).
