Tiffany Lamps – A History and How They Are Still Made Today

Tiffany lamps were originally made by Louis Comfort Tiffany, who was a 19th century painter. He was admitted to the National Academy at the age of 23 and was the youngest member. He began working with stained glass in the 1870s and produced many stained glass windows for churches, often using flowers and plants in his designs.

After that, he teamed up with two other artists to form Louis Comfort Tiffany and Associated American Artists, specializing in stained glass windows, an excellent example of which can be seen in the White House. The company was dissolved in 1885 and he founded the Tiffany Glass Company, this time by himself. This later became Tiffany Studios, which produced Tiffany lamps until the early 1930s.

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1879, he was inspired to make glass shades, drawing on his experience with stained glass and incorporating the flower and plant motifs he used for them. He also used the same methods he used for the windows, making paper patterns of the design and using them to cut pieces of glass, lining the pieces with copper foil and soldering them together to assemble the shades. He patented the Nautilus lampshade, a shell-shaped design, and included it when he prepared his first exhibition in 1899.

Today, Tiffany lamps and shades are still made using Tiffany’s traditional methods. The shades are made from many pieces of colored stained glass soldered together to create designs that include flowers, dragonflies, butterflies and also more abstract designs.

The traditional method requires many hours of painstaking work. First, we carve a wooden model of the desired tiffany lampshade, coat it with glue and place paper or linen over it. The design is then drawn on the paper/canvas, the lines represent each small piece of colored glass that will create the design, a notation is added specifying the color of each piece.

Once the design is complete, the paper/canvas is removed from the model and cut along the chosen lines so that it lies flat and becomes a two-dimensional pattern. Each area is numbered to identify it, the design is traced onto another piece of paper as a reference for later assembly of the shade, and then the original is cut into all the separate pieces that are used to cut the small pieces of pieced glass.

The design is then assembled by applying adhesive wax to the wooden model and pressing each piece of glass into it according to the reference plan. Once the entire shade is assembled, the glass parts are removed individually, covered with copper foil and soldered back into place. The whole thing is then heated to melt the wax and allow the shade to be removed and the inner edges to be soldered. If the design requires, metal trims are soldered to the front and/or bottom edges before the shade is attached to the metal (often bronze) base.

Tiffany lamps are wonderful as accents in the home and add an elegance that is often missing in modern design. A jewel-colored stained glass window casts brilliant shards of light on the walls and ceilings, and a Tiffany lamp will transform a dark corner into something magical.
