The Nissan Skyline began the life of the RB Engine line. The technical specifications for the line are as follows:

  • RB25-2.5 LITER 2498CC, 86MM BORE, 71.7MM HID

From 1993, the RB25DE and RB25DET were equipped with the NVCS (Nissan Variable Cam System), which allowed the engine to produce more torque and power at lower rpm than was possible in previous versions. Other changes that were made were the addition of a revised electrical system, the turbocharger on the Rb25DET was changed from an aluminum supercharger to a plastic one, the ignition system got an upgrade with the introduction of ignition coils with integral igniters which eliminated the need for a separate ignition device . Other engine changes during this time included a revised engine unit, new camshaft angle and throttle position sensors, and a redesigned mass air flow meter. Mechanically, the engines were identical to the Series 1 and 2 engines.

The RB26DETT engine was produced mainly for the Nissan Skyline GT-R in the years 1989-2002. The intake for the RB26DETT differs from the other RB series engines in that it uses six individual throttle bodies instead of one throttle body. It also uses a twin turbo system that works in parallel. Both turbos are the same size and the wastegate is set to limit boost to 10 psi. this engine is known for its power and power potential. It’s not uncommon for people to get 600hp out of these engines without any internal changes. Also from a reliability perspective, these engines regularly go 100,000 miles and even 200,000 miles if regularly serviced.

RB26DETT engines built prior to 1992 have been found to have common oil problems. The area where the crank meets the oil pump has been machined a bit too small, which eventually causes an oil shortage problem and oil pump failure at higher revs. Later versions of the engine fixed this problem and aftermarket performance parts manufacturers make oil pump extension drives to fix this problem.

The RB30 engine was available in the following configurations:

  • RB30S- single cam with carburetor
  • RB30E – single fuel injection
  • RB30ET with single cam fuel injection and turbocharger

The RB30DET engine was not actually produced by Nissan, the RB30DETT designation actually refers to a turbocharged engine that normally had an engine block from the RB30E, this was mated to a cylinder head from the RB25DE, RB25DET or RB25DETT, the RB20DE/DET heads were not used due to the difference in bore size.
