Boost Horsepower and Performance With a Cold Air Intake System

Have you ever noticed that in the fall, when the temperatures are lower, your car starts and starts more? From the brake light, your car accelerates much smoother and faster. You like it, don’t you? It puts a big smile on your face every time. This is because your engine runs better with cooler air. Here’s a question for you. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a show like this all year round? Absolutely! This can be achieved with cold air induction, and you don’t need to have a lot of engine experience to see a 10-20 horsepower increase at the rear wheels, as well as an increase in torque.

Let’s go over some basics. Your engine is basically a big air pump. The easier it can breathe in and out, the better the vehicle will perform. In this article, we will focus on breathing as part of the equation. The exhalation section is your exhaust system, which we will cover in a separate article.

There are two basic stages of cold air induction. The first is an increase in air volume, and the second is a decrease in the temperature of the intake air.

FIRST LEVEL: Increase in air volume

Filter:

If you open the hood of your vehicle and open the air filter housing, you will more than likely find a paper filter. This is a standard OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) air filter. They are cheap for car manufacturers to buy and install. If you go to any aftermarket auto parts store, you’ll find them ready to go. A much better product is a cotton filter. A cotton filter traps smaller contaminants than a paper filter and also allows a greater volume of air to pass through, allowing your engine to breathe easier and therefore perform much better. In addition, you do not need to change the filter like a regular paper filter. Just take it out and clean it occasionally when you see it dirty. There are several companies that specialize in these types of filters, such as K&N, AEM, and Injen. Most of these suppliers suggest oiling the filter before installation. Now I don’t mean motor oil, but the special oil sold by suppliers. This oil helps trap even finer particles without hindering air volume induction. Don’t worry about the oil being expensive. It didn’t. K&N sells an air filter service kit for about $20. It will last you quite a while. The kit contains an oil spray and a cleaning solution. Whenever you take the filter out for cleaning, spray it with a cleaning solution before rinsing. It helps remove trapped dirt particles from the fine filter element.

Installation:

Installing the filter is easy and a simple do-it-yourself project. No different than replacing a standard paper air filter.

Step 1: Locate the air filter assembly under the hood.

Step 2: The housing is usually attached with 2 or 3 metal clamps. Open/loosen the clamps.

Step 3: With the clamps open, pull the case apart. Be gentle! Some vehicles have a MAF (mass air flow sensor) attached to the lower duct coming out of the case. It’s not an overly sensitive sensor, but you don’t want to be brutal with it. If you’re not familiar with what MAF looks like, you can’t miss it. From it come the wires that run from the MAF to the vehicle’s computer. The MAF measures the volume and temperature of the air entering the engine and then adjusts the fuel mixture to optimize fuel efficiency.

Step 4: Remove the old paper air filter and install a new “oiled” cotton filter.

Step 5: Reattach the air filter housing clamps.

SECOND LEVEL: Lower the temperature (also cold air induction)

The cotton filters mentioned above are great performance enhancers for your vehicle, but if you want to take it a step further and see even better results, you’ll probably want to replace the air filter housing with a unit that moves the air filter further away from the engine. These assemblies usually move the filter to the front wheel housing or to the front of the vehicle near the front air dam. Either option will draw cooler air from outside the vehicle versus drawing hot air from the engine trapped under the hood. K&N is the leader in this market segment, but if you want to compare prices check the internet and I’m sure there are others. K&N has an in-house engineering team that tests all of their products to ensure that the products they sell will meet or exceed expectations. Another good thing about a company like K&N is that you can buy the entire system, filter and filter housing as a kit. The kit comes with easy to follow installation instructions, but I’ll give you some quick easy steps to put your mind at ease.

Step 1: Disconnect the air duct from the throttle body on the engine. This is usually a metal retaining clamp that can be unscrewed. The MAF housing can be sandwiched between the air duct and the throttle body and also has its own retaining clamp. Just unscrew the retaining clamp and remove the MAF. Pay attention to which side of the MAF is facing the throttle body. Air flows in one side of the MAF and out the other. The MAF will need to be installed in the same direction when finished. Put the MAF in a safe place for now.

Step 2: Disconnect the air duct from the air filter housing. If you haven’t met MAF yet, you will now. Just follow the instructions above to remove the MAF. An air vacuum hose may also be included. Just gently pull it apart, leaving the hose attached to the engine. Now remove the air duct completely and set it aside.

Step 3: Disconnect the air filter housing from the engine compartment. This is not difficult. Usually two to four places are attached to the housing in the engine compartment so that it does not move. After removing all the screws, remove the case.

Step 4: Attach the new air duct to the throttle body. Check the new housing instructions for the MAF location. If it requires mounting the MAF between the air duct and the throttle body, install the MAF on the throttle body first, then the air duct will attach to the MAF. It may require the air duct to be attached directly to the throttle body and the MAF to be attached to the end of the air duct that attaches to the air filter housing. If this is the case, go ahead and attach the air duct to the throttle body, then attach the MAF to the air duct.

The new air duct will have a different configuration than your original OEM duct as it now moves to where the air filter will be.

Step 5: Install the new air filter housing in the location specified by the supplier. This can be in the front air dam area or in the fender. It is usually in close proximity to the original location of the air filter housing so that the attachment points can still be used.

Step 6: Once the air filter housing is firmly attached to the engine compartment, attach the air duct to the housing using the supplied clips.

Step 6: Reattach the vacuum hose to the air duct if your car has one. Also attach the MAF harness to the MAF.

Step 7: Check all clamps to make sure they are nice and tight.

Step 8: Start the vehicle. Let it idle for a few minutes. The engine computer will recalibrate to the new air volume. Then take a short test drive. You should immediately notice a noticeable improvement in vehicle performance. After the test drive, check all clamps and connections to make sure everything is tight.
