There are two reasons why air supply limits power. The first is due to acoustics. Many drivers, those who don’t care about performance, don’t want to hear their engine and prefer peace and quiet while driving. For this reason, the air intakes are designed with a sound resonator that limits decibels under the hood. This results in a loss of power due to the restriction of the air supply; any input limitation inhibits power. The cold air intakes are designed with as few restrictions as possible, while at the same time fitting well into the engine compartment. This allows maximum airflow through the engine. The cold air intake grilles also draw air from outside the vehicle, instead of under the hood. The ambient air is denser allowing more air to enter the engine which is what we are looking for. Installing a cold air intake is not that difficult and can usually be installed in less than an hour. Follow the steps below to install the cold air intake in the vehicle:

1. Open the hood and locate the base air intake assembly

2. Disconnect all sensors attached to the intake, this will include the intake air temperature sensor, the mass air flow sensor and the manifold absolute pressure sensor

3. Using needle nose pliers, remove any vacuum hoses attached to the assembly

4. Loosen the intake on the throttle body and air box with a Philips screwdriver and remove the intake.

5. Next, it will be necessary to remove the air box in which the air filter is located. Use a Philips screwdriver or a 10mm wrench to remove the screws that hold the air box in place.

6. Open the cold air intake box and place all the parts and make sure all the parts are there.

7. Connect the silicone coupling to the throttle body and then attach the first piece of intake to it.

8. Connect another silicone coupling to the end of this suction part and reattach the second suction tube to it.

9. Now the suction pipe must be installed in the recess of the fender, from where the engine will receive air.

10. To gain access to the fender, we will start by loosening the lug nuts on the wheel, then raise the vehicle and secure it with a stand.

11. Remove the wheel

12. Unscrew the plastic fender cover and remove it. You now have access to the suction pipe

13. Attach the air filter element to the intake pipe

14. Fasten the plastic mudguard cover well and install the wheel

15. Lower the vehicle and tighten the nuts

16. Reattach all sensors and vacuum lines that were disconnected

17. Start the vehicle and enjoy

You have successfully installed the cold air intake on your vehicle. Depending on the type of vehicle you have, you can expect a power increase of 5 to 20 hp and a similar increase in torque. Don’t be alarmed by the increased noise coming from under the hood, as this air intake is working normally. A cold air intake is a good start to upgrading your vehicle, but if you don’t also replace the exhaust system, you won’t be taking full advantage of the upgraded air intake.

Caution: Installing a cold air intake on your vehicle should not void your warranty, but please check with your dealer. Many car manufacturers sell aftermarket parts, so I recommend going that route if you’re concerned about your warranty.
