What Is Personal Development?

Dear Tristan,

I’m a bit confused about what personal development means and what it entails. How is personal development different from self-help, self-improvement, human potential, or personal growth? Can you help me clarify this?

Thank you,

Jeanette Merlow

Hi Jeanette,

I agree with you. There is quite a bit of confusion in this field about what exactly personal development is – and what it isn’t. I will do my best to clarify what personal development is for you.

What is personal development?

Personal development is the improvement of specific life skills necessary to facilitate happiness and success in personal life. These life skills are the basic building blocks that form any success or failure you have in life. Personal development skills become the foundation from which all your achievements in life come from and are directly related to victory and success in life.

One key difference between personal development skills and other skills you may have is that personal development skills are used 24 hours a day, while you may only use your programming skills eight hours a day as part of your job. When you talk to someone, you are using personal development skills. What you choose to eat is personal development. When you explore your emotions – this is personal development. Regulating sleeping habits is also a part of personal development.

Personal development skills are life skills that must be honed in order to reap the benefits of a life worth living. Investing time in personal development leads to a superior individual who lives a more fulfilling life than those who do not choose to develop.

What personal development is not

Personal development does not involve diagnosing or treating an illness or injury. There seems to be a general confusion in the field of personal development about what is and what is not, and since there are so many books in bookstores and libraries that miscategorize mental illness books in the self-improvement section, let me explain. this point. A key characteristic of someone who wants to engage in personal development is that they are generally healthy and normal individuals who are able and willing to make progress in their lives. In other words, they want to become top individuals.

On the other hand, a person who is unable or unwilling to move forward in their life and pursue happiness and success in life because of a past illness, trauma or injury that prevents them from doing so needs treatment or therapy to help them recover. These are individuals who are not functioning normally and their goal is to function at normal capacity. In other words, they want to recover.

Personal development has many other faces

In the context of my own coaching practice, I look at personal development, self-improvement and personal growth as the same thing. I look at self-help a little differently than personal development, because self-help topics are less focused on personal growth and more on fixing a particular condition, which is why there are many books in the self-help sections of bookstores. and libraries that focus on addressing problems rather than creating superior performance.

Ten components of personal development

The definition of personal development varies from person to person, but through my experience as a personal development coach and former police officer, I have discovered that there are actually ten key areas that make up an individual’s peak performance. These areas of focus are:

  1. Life purpose: Having a purpose in life gives meaning to all the activities and goals you set for yourself throughout your life. We all know how to spend the time we have in life, but if we don’t make sense of those activities that occupy our time, our life will be completely meaningless.

Subsections of life purpose include:

    • Legacy
    • Values
    • Passions
    • Talents
    • Spirituality
    1. Setting goals: Goals are stepping stones that allow you to achieve your legacy in life. Every successful person knows that to achieve personal success in life you have to challenge yourself and strive to achieve more than your status quo. Goal setting is a powerful success skill that allows you to win the game of life.

    Subsections of goal setting include:

      • Visualization
      • Strategic planning
      1. Productivity: The problem many people have when they set goals is that they start clinging to get what they want and end up bitter and discouraged because achieving the goal doesn’t work that way. It’s like someone who would like to stand on the podium and receive a gold medal at the Olympics without spending time training. While we can’t take shortcuts to achieve our goals, we can reduce the time it takes to achieve those goals by being more productive. Successful people are masters of productivity, and it’s no mistake that they can accomplish more in less time than most people out there. Learning to be productive and make the most of the time you have is an important part of personal development.

      Productivity subsections include:

        • Time management
        • Organization
        • Prioritization
        • Delegation
        • Finish the job
        1. Motivation: If goals are the path to personal success, then motivation is the fuel that gets you there. Motivation is a necessary aspect of personal development, as almost all of us know that lack of motivation greatly hinders our process of achieving goals. Learning to master your motivation can help you achieve success faster than you thought possible.

        Subsections of motivation include:

          • Inspiration
          • Role models
          • Responsible partners
          • Principles of pain and pleasure
          1. Self-awareness: Emotions can empower or hinder our performance. Emotions act as a thermometer that tells us the quality of the experiences we live. Therefore, it is necessary not only to understand your emotions, but also to learn to use them effectively. Self-awareness involves intrapersonal communication, that is, the ability to truly communicate with yourself and recognize your inner wants and needs.

          Subdivisions of self-awareness include:

            • Emotional intelligence
            • Responsibility
            • Anger management
            • Unconditional love
            • Intuition
            1. Marketing: No matter how good you are at a certain skill or how much you want to contribute to others, nothing will matter if people don’t know about it. All extremely successful people throughout history knew how to market themselves, and this is vital to everyday life. If you are married or want to be married someday, this includes marketing YOU. If you’ve ever gone through a job interview, then you’ve used marketing skills. Those who know how to market themselves or their products simply have more luxury than those who do not know how to market themselves, regardless of actual training or skill level, simply because people are aware of them.

            Sub-divisions of marketing include:

              • Marketing YOU
              • Marketing of services or products
              • Networking
              1. Physical health: Your body is the vehicle that carries your thoughts and intentions into the real world. That’s why you want to have a vehicle that is well maintained and runs smoothly. Keeping your body functioning optimally involves eating right, exercising, and monitoring your stress levels.

              Subsections of Optimal Health include:

                • Fitness
                • Diet
                • sleep
                • stress
                1. Ratios: The definition of synergy is the bringing together of two or more entities with the intention of creating more together than any one of them could create alone. All great relationships in your life should involve synergy, and creating synergy with other people involves the skills of empathy and communication. Success in life is never a one-person project. It involves a lot of people and it involves synergy.

                Subsections of relationships include:

                  • Compassion
                  • Communication abilities
                  • Negotiation
                  • Conflict resolution
                  • Interpreting body language
                  1. Management: Every successful man who ever lived was a leader in his field. A leader is one who paves the way for others to follow and has the courage to stand out from the pack. A leader is an agent of change and is flexible enough to deal with unexpected events that come his way. They show others the way when it is unclear.

                  Subdivisions of management include:

                    • Courage
                    • Decision making
                    • Solving the problem
                    • Responsibility
                    1. Money management: In order to achieve personal success, you need to reach financial freedom, which is the point where you make enough money so that you don’t have to worry about money. Money is energy and you need to learn how to manage this energy for optimal personal development

                    Sub-divisions of money management include:

                      • Entrepreneurship
                      • Delivering value
                      • Investment
                      • Money management

I hope this explains personal development for you.

                      For passion and purpose,

                      Tristan
