3 Steps to Build a Motorcycle Exhaust From a Perforated Filter Tube

Few things in the world are more satisfying than the deep, guttural growl that comes from a powerful motorcycle. Whether you’re dealing with a 450cc dirt bike or an 1100cc touring bike, the right exhaust can really increase performance and improve sound. Not to mention how much better a motorcycle looks with a gleaming stainless steel exhaust. However, aftermarket motocross and road bike manufacturers know how much you love a great exhaust. So they try to charge as much as you might pay for the bike itself. Some direct systems, called draft tubes, can cost more than $1,000. This is just for a straight length of metal pipe. With a little know-how and a perforated filter tube, you can make your own for a fraction of the cost. Here’s how to do it.

1. Start with the tubes

There are two types of pipe bends. Crush bends are, as the name suggests, pipes that look crushed where they are bent. Thorn turns are smooth turns without waves. These ridges in the metal create turbulence that increases vibration and robs your motorcycle of power. If you can, get mandrel bent tubing. You won’t regret the extra cost.

2. Build your muffler

Then you can proceed with the manufacture of the muffler. It might sound difficult, but it’s actually quite simple. A muffler reduces the amount of noise coming from your exhaust by slowing down the gas coming out of the pipe. You just need a place to send that gas and something to slow it down.

Your muffler will consist of a perforated filter tube, a larger steel tube surrounding it, and some ceramic insulation to fill the space. A perforated pipe will allow gas to escape through dozens of different holes instead of just through the end of the pipe. The gas will then shoot into the ceramic insulation where it will slow down significantly. Slowing down the exhaust should reduce the noise.

It’s probably easier to make the perforated filter pipe a little smaller than the exhaust pipe so it slides into the exhaust and helps create a little back pressure.

3. All together

Then you want to weld it all together. You may need to hire a professional to build it for you. Wrap the perforated filter tube in ceramic wool and then weld it into a larger tube. Here you go. You have a muffler that fast. Next, you’ll want to weld a homemade muffler on the end of the exhaust. You are ready to ride.

The benefit of making your own muffler isn’t just monetary. You’ll probably save some money, but you’ll also be able to customize your driving experience. What you just made is called a flat muffler as opposed to a chamber muffler. Chambered mufflers are filled with flaps that disrupt gas flow. If you want to reduce the sound even more, you can choose a longer perforated filter tube for the muffler core.

Building your own muffler is a quick and easy way to control the ride and sound of your bike.
