How to Protect Your Cycads From Cold Weather

Even relatively mild climates like those of Southern California can present challenges to young cycads. If you don’t benefit from large cover plants, you should take extra steps to protect your cycad investment.

With 39 years of experience in growing and maintaining palms and cycads, I hope that as the cold winter weather approaches, I can be of some help in achieving success in your garden. I hope to share my successes as well as my failures and how I overcame them.

The climate must be taken into account when caring for palms and cycads. I currently live in North San Diego and have for 12 years. The climate is particularly warm in the summer and considerably colder in the winter. While I have lived here, the temperature has even been as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit for the three years that I have been here. In contrast, I used to live very close to the ocean where the weather was actually much milder.

Unfortunately, this extreme cold weather killed many palm and cyad saplings and saplings and scorched the leaves on many of my larger palms and cyads.

The leaves of the large green-leafed cycads that were outdoors were often burned all the way to the leaf crowns due to the lack of a canopy. It turned out that this was due to cold air directly meeting the upper leaves of the cyada. Fortunately, the lower leaves mostly escaped the direct effect of the cold air, showing little or no burn damage. Obviously, young palms and cycads benefit significantly from overhead protection.

For a relatively young garden that does not have much overhead protection, there are several ways to overcome the problem and solutions.

1. Get some larger plants (I prefer cold hardy palms) for overhead protection.

2. Cover the plants with foil to protect against frost

3. Cover the cicada’s caudex with straw.

4. For smaller plants; cover the entire plant with an upside-down grow pot or plastic trash can. Make sure these covers are removed as soon as the cold is over.

5. Try to choose plant types that have a higher tolerance for cold weather

If you take the time to protect your young cycads, they can enjoy a lifetime.
