Spirituality and Big Island Volcano Tours

For me, spirituality is connection and meaning and communication with nature. In Hawaii, and more specifically, when I went on Big Island volcano tours, I felt most in touch with my spirituality.

Whether I’m walking across a black lava field, hearing the rumbling of a planet, or smelling the vapors rising from the center of the earth, it’s only when I’m somewhere on top of an active volcano that I can believe there is a power greater than myself. Or that there is divine order in the universe. Or that my life and my problems really are insignificant in the grand scheme of things, in the shadow of creation and destruction, on the side of a spewing volcano.

Some pray to a higher power, some to the universe, some to God. But as you walk across the crater in the middle of the world’s most active and longest erupting volcano, pray to Pele, the Hawaiian deity who rules these islands and is said to reside deep within the heart of Kilauea. You don’t want her to be mad at you.

In ancient Hawaiian spirituality there was and still is a deep connection and respect for the elements and nature. There is reverence for ancestors and the belief that their spirits still guide later generations. There is a mix of mythology, legends and modern culture that is unique to these islands.

Visiting the rainforests, waterfalls, lava tubes, and lava flows in Big Island Volcanoes National Park, I felt a connection to all the elements (kumu) that Hawaiians sing to and tell their hula stories about. I felt ancient connections with air (ha), fire (ahi), water (wai) and earth (honua).

Above all, you can feel the aloha in Hawaii. Aloha means love and also means “with breath”. If the natural elements are the spirituality of Hawaii, then aloha is the Hawaiian religion. Aloha, stripped of tourism and consumerism, means connecting with each other and connecting with nature. It is forgiveness and compassion. It is about shared experience and shared meaning.

Some find that meaning in a church or on the beach, but I find that shared meaning at the top of Kilauea, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa. I find it deep inside a lava tube cavity. I find him at the edge of a raging river of hot molten lava. It is found in wet rainforests and in barren deserts of primordial lava. I find it in the ancient spirits that still roam the island of Hawaii. I breathe it in the flower-scented air and see it carved into the steep cliffs of this volcanic land mass.

I discover the spirituality of the islands; discovering my own spirituality with every breath I take in Hawaii. With every aloha I breathe.
