Landscaping Designs for a Backyard Pond

Landscaping plans that go around or near a pond can be a bit tricky, so there are a few things to keep in mind. Your landscaping plans should complement and emphasize the area around the pond without adding debris or becoming an obstacle and interfering with the mechanisms that keep the water moving. If you have fish in your pond, or if you plan to have some fish, make sure you don’t use plants that are toxic to them.

A bog garden is sometimes called a water feature, but it differs from a traditional pond. A water garden of this type sometimes uses a perforated pond liner and fills the pond with a mixture of soil, water, peat and compost to create a bog. Some plants that can be used in this garden can be cat’s tail, irises, marsh rosemary, plantain and tortoiseshell. Some of these plants can even be used on the outside of the bar pool, such as umbrella plants, tulas and cattails. Most bog plants can be easily nurtured in very moist soil or mud outside of a bog garden where water flows over it daily.

The sounds of falling or trickling water are very pleasant and soothing. Because of this, many of us incorporate waterfalls and water fountains into our backyard or garden landscaping designs. Running water is not only soothing but also aerates the pond and gives the fish a wonderful habitat; it also keeps the water moving so it doesn’t stagnate. You can create a waterfall by purchasing a pond fountain kit or by using a powerful pump powerful enough to send water down piles of rocks or down a handmade slide.

There are plants such as clivia and agapanthus that you can use as part of your pond’s landscaping, along with horizontal juniper that will work well next to the water. Some tropical plants such as yuccas and succulents are also good. Grasses, sedges and rushes can also be incorporated near the water’s edge, and what about the movement of miscanthus and bamboo in the breeze. Ferns are popular perennials, especially bracken ferns, shield and staghorn ferns, and palm-like plants called cycads.

Plants that have parts toxic to fish are: amaryllis bulbs; anemone flowers; leaves and flowers of the angel’s trumpet tree; all azaleas and rhododendrons; bird of paradise seeds; kale leaves; crocus bulbs; leaves and twigs of wild and cultivated cherries; whole delphinium; English ivy berries, all from foxglove; holly berries and leaves; hydrangea, all parts; whole yellow jasmine; mistletoe berries; oleander leaves; all lily of the valley; philodendron leaves and juice; poinsettia flower and leaves; all snapdragon; and all tiger lilies. That’s just a few; there are many more that you need to research before planting.

If you have a koi pond, you will want to minimize the amount of sun and wind as much as possible to prevent algae and the “bleaching effect” on the color of the fish from the sun. Most water gardens need just the opposite; enough sunlight for plant growth. For ponds of this type, the taller vertical elements should be placed at the north end of the pool. Grouping similar types of plants together is more effective than having them all one at a time. For ideas, your best bet is to visit other waterscapes and check out some garden books on waterscape ideas.

For a complete picture, try to include the entire yard so that everything blends together. Your regular flower garden should blend naturally with your pond. Try to map everything out on paper during the planning phase and once you have everything in mind, you won’t have a problem. Your pond will look very finished and with some beautiful landscaping it will look like it has been there for many years.
