The Motivation Myth: What You Really Need to Know to Increase Your Motivation
Have you ever had a day where you just can’t seem to get started? The alarm goes off and you’re still lying down; he’s not ready to take what seems like a huge step out of bed. I’ve definitely been there and wondered.. what is it about So I decided to do some research and self-exploration and came to a conclusion that I want to share with you in hopes that it will help you change your perspective on motivation.
There are many myths circulating about motivation or the lack of it.
Let’s start with some frequently asked questions:
How do I motivate myself?
How do I get motivated?
Why am I not motivated?
Myth: The false underlying premise in these questions is that motivation is lacking or that you need to do something special to get motivation. In fact, you might believe that some people are blessed with an inner wellspring of motivation that flows within them.
The truth: In fact, you already have all the motivation you need. Motivation is an endless renewable resource that exists within you. It doesn’t run out, it can’t be taken from you, and one person doesn’t get more than the other.
Myth: The problem is lack of motivation. This is the reason things don’t get done.
The truth: Lack of motivation is a symptom. It requires a deeper understanding of self-awareness to find the real reason for not doing so.
Think about that for a moment. Your next question might be, if you already have all the motivation you need, what’s the problem? The answer lies in your emotional intelligence (EQ). What are your EQ scores in the areas of self-awareness and self-management because these two areas drive your motivation? While I don’t know the specific answer to this question for you, I would venture to guess that the problem may be that you are unconsciously choosing how and when to use motivation.
Example #1: You get up every day and play video games. Your friends and family say you lack motivation. You really show a lot motivation however, you show motivation in your desire to play videos rather than in areas that others have decided are more important.
Example #2: You go to work every day. You rarely miss work because you understand 1) the return you get from the work and 2) the importance of your role in the work you do. you are motivated to go to work.
Serious Talk: Instead of lacking motivation, consider using your motivation selectively. That could be just fine. It’s really up to you and what you decide is important. Emotional intelligence is self-awareness, and that includes being honest with yourself about what you really want versus what you say you want.
It is important to start using motivation situationally. As the above example shows, no one is always “unmotivated”, just as no one is always “motivated”. Breaking down when you are motivated and when you are not gives you a better understanding of what is contributing to your lack of motivation.
So how can you help clear the noise around motivation? Assess the three key areas below and you may find that you simply need to adjust where you invest your motivational energy.
Three (3) simple steps to understand and manage motivation (CUF):
#1 – Clarity– Which task or area of your life requires motivation? More importantly, why does it matter? What will be the impact on you? How will it affect others? Whenever you feel unmotivated, clarify the purpose of this task. Is it for you or is it done to please others? Clarify the purpose and benefits of why this particular task or area is important. That “why” becomes the fuel in your tank. It helps you stay focused and picks you up when you’re ready to fall. Your “why” is the main reason for completing this task, so make it good! If you find that it’s not really something you want to do, a different conversation is needed with those who hold those expectations of you.
#2 – Urgency– When do you want to do it? Is it important to do it in the next 2 weeks, in the next 2 years, or in the next 10 years. Be really clear about this part. To create a compelling desire for change, you must have a sense of urgency, otherwise human nature will take over and we will continue to do what we have always done. After all, why the rush? This is the theory behind Mel Robbins’ 5 Second Rule. Create an urgency to change, then don’t allow yourself time to create excuses and excuses. 5-4-3-2-1…do it!
#3 – Focus– Now that you understand what and when, now comes the how. The way to start moving is by shifting focus. Simply put, you get what you focus on. If you want to do something, just focus on it. Move it to the top of the priority list. Actively think about it, start planning it, start doing it, don’t let it deter you, and check in every day. Plus, it has to fit into your routine somehow. Otherwise, it will feel like putting a square peg in a round hole… it just won’t work. Finally, create accountability systems and partners so you can’t let yourself off the hook. If this is truly a priority for you, take the time and space in your life to embrace the positive and get it done.
There are hundreds of other strategies that I could list here. But I believe in the simplicity of things, because sometimes the smallest actions create extraordinary results.
As you move forward, always remember… that you don’t lack motivation, you may just lack the use of it.
