Grow Adenium (Desert Rose) From Seed

Hello fellow adenium growers.

I often receive emails from my customers asking me for the best way to get a higher germination rate from their adenium seeds. Well, that’s the million dollar question that has many answers.

However, as part of my business I plant thousands of adenium seeds every year and the following is a procedure I follow without any problems and always with higher germination rates than other similar methods I have tried before.

It may seem obvious, but first and foremost, a successful adenium seed germination rate is highly dependent on obtaining the freshest seed possible from a trusted supplier experienced in growing adenium from seed.

Adenium seeds are very easy to grow, anyone can grow them as long as you give them everything they need to thrive. Adeniums usually germinate in 7 to 10 days, but occasionally some germinate in a day or two.

There are a few key ingredients you need to encourage the germination of adenium seeds.

1. Fresh seeds

2. Lots of light (sunlight or grow lights)

3. Heat (25 – 35 degrees Celsius)

4. Water (humidity)

5. Mix for good drainage

Step 1

Soak the seeds in warm water for 2-4 hours to rehydrate the seeds.

Fill the seed tray with quick-draining potting mix. Something like the following combination is an excellent value with a high germination rate: a 50/50 mix of cactus compost and perlite, although we prefer coir.

Make a 3- to 4-inch layer of potting mix in the seed tray.

Step 2

After the seeds have soaked for the allotted time, carefully place the adenium seeds on the surface of the potting mix, spacing them about 1-2 inches apart.

Barely cover the seeds with potting mix.

Step 3

Water the Adenium seeds to thoroughly moisten the potting mix in the seed tray. Water the seeds once a week, only when the potting mix is almost dry, you can spray them with a spray bottle if you like.

DO NOT ALLOW IT TO DRY AND DO NOT ALLOW THE MIXTURE TO SET.

Step 4

Keep the air temperature around the Adenium seeds around 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

It would be ideal to have a propagator and a good light source.

Move the seed tray into full sunlight when the seeds germinate and begin to germinate.

Step 5

Transplant adenium seedlings when they have at least three sets of “true” leaves, which are the larger leaves that appear behind the smaller leaves of the seedling. You can usually transplant seedlings about a month after planting the seeds.

There are many other ways to grow adenium from seed to achieve similar results but the basics remain the same and speaking from experience at http://www.adeniumstore.com this particular method works very well for me and should work for you too.

Happy growing!
