Pre-Planting For Your Garden

As winter is still approaching, don’t give up and focus on planning your garden instead. No, I’m not crazy. The ideal time to start planning your garden is when winter is still licking you. Then you can get out of the multitude of seed catalogs and see what the experts have to offer. You can also draw a general plan of your vegetable garden or new or revitalized beds on paper. Making your plan serves two purposes: it prepares you for what you’ll need to order or buy or even pre-grow inside long before you need it outside. However, it also eliminates the winter dull drums that come when you’ve had enough of winter at a certain point and are ready for spring.

So, in addition to drawing a plan for your vegetable garden or new flower bed on paper, you can prepare by reading up on whether or not these seeds can be grown indoors. Some plants, many in fact, can be “started” as they call it inside. This allows the gardener to not have to wait as long for the abundance of vegetables that the plant will provide. It also prevents them from spending part of their budget on buying pre-grown plants from the greenhouse. Budgeting is always good, right?

So all you’ll really need for your pre-grown plants is:

• Outline – as it tells you how many plants you need.

• Plate filled with empty six-pack planting containers.

• Potting soil mix with fertilizer.

• Small plastic picnic cups

• Larger plastic picnic cups

• Seeds

• Cordless drill with attachment or large nail

Once you know exactly how many plants you will need, you are ready to begin. All of the supplies listed can be obtained from your local hardware or lawn and garden store; some can even be found in your local pharmacy today. Once you have your tray of empty six-pack containers, simply fill them – six-pack containers – full of dirt; but don’t squeeze it, you want it nice and loose. Then wet it well. Now the preparation of your tray is complete.

You can then mark and place one to two seeds per hole, per plant type, in each of the six packets. This part is important, try to make one six pack of one type of plant; this is so you won’t have to guess which plants they are because they haven’t been labeled. Then cover the apartment with plastic food wrap and place it on a windowsill or on a table where the tray fits snugly in front of your window. Once the plants have sprouted and have their first two leaves, you can remove the plastic. After you have the plastic on and after you take it off, check the soil every day to see if it is wet.

When they outgrow the six packs, you can poke two holes (with a nail or drill) for drainage in the bottom of your smallest plastic jars, fill with dirt, soak, and transplant the larger plants into them. When they get even bigger, repeat this with larger plastic jars. Voila, you’ve just made your own plants for your garden.

Some seeds will be more stubborn than others to grow indoors; but with a little practice you can overcome the most stubborn plants and grow them easily.
