Ways to Commute in the City of Hyderabad
Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh in India, is known for many tourist locations. It has many historical, educational and cultural sites that attract millions of tourists from all over the world every year.
Charminar historical monument, palaces, museums with rich treasures of traditional arts and crafts etc. there are only a few places worth visiting in the city. But since each of them is located in a different part of the city, it is important to have a proper plan for driving in the city. This will not only save you time but also money. By choosing the right means of transport, you can make your trip memorable and enjoyable. For this you need to know the different means of transport that you can use in the city.
There are city buses run by APSRTC and other private organizations, local trains run by Indian Railways, auto rickshaws and private taxis. As a tourist, you can use one of these. Let’s briefly talk about each of them.
APSRTC City Buses – Economic Mode of Transport:
APSRTC (Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) buses connect most of the interesting places in the city. The organization operates as many as 4,000 buses in the city, which make nearly 40,000 trips and transport about 36 lakh people every day. These buses can be reached from major bus stations – Secunderabad (Railway Station and Rathifile Bus Stand), Mahatma Gandhi Bus Stand (MGBS), Central Bus Stand (CBS) and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Bus Terminal. Buses will stop at all bus stops located every two kilometers within the city limits.
You can find compact ordinary buses to spacious air-conditioned buses in the city. With a minimum fare of Rs 5 (ordinary bus), you can cover a distance of 2-3 km in the city. The maximum fare in regular buses is around Rs 17 which can take you around 35-40 km across the city. If you want to travel in an air-conditioned bus, it would cost you around Rs.65 only. If you plan to travel for a whole day by city buses, you can buy a ‘Travel as you like ticket’, which is a one-day ticket for traveling by city buses.
Buses in the city are not only economical, but also safe. While traveling in these buses, you can see typical Hyderabadis (residents of Hyderabad); it gives you a real sense of the city. However, it is better to avoid using these buses during peak hours as they will be packed with working people in the city.
MMTS trains – The fastest and cheapest mode of transport:
MMTS (Mutli-Model Transport System) run by Indian Railways is the local railway system in Hyderabad. Compared to APSRTC city buses, traveling by local trains is cheaper, faster and safer. However, currently local trains are running only on two main routes – one Falaknuma to Lingampally via Secunderabad and the other Hyderabad to Lingampally. For a new person, it might be a bit difficult to take these trains to visit tourist places as they are not well connected with roads.
You can definitely try MMTS if you want to experience traveling by local trains in Hyderabad that take you through rock formations and lakes in the city. The minimum fare in these trains is Rs 3 which you can travel up to 0-10 km and the maximum fare is Rs 10 for a distance of 35-40 km. Isn’t it economical?
Autorickshaws – For comfortable travel:
Autorickshaws, popularly known as tuk-tuks, are three-wheeled passenger vehicles commonly seen in the city. As many as 70,000 cars drive within the city limits. Painted in bright yellow, they are small, cute and can easily accommodate 3 people. At current rates, the lowest auto fare is Rs 16 (first 1 km) and increases by Rs 9 for every further km. These prices are valid anywhere in the city from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. From 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the cost is one and a half times the original price.
Apart from the normal auto rickshaws, you can find other types of auto rickshaws with 3 or 4 wheels and seven seats in the city. They are often used to transport passengers who would like to share their journey with others. But you can only find them in a few places, mostly on the outskirts of the city, because they are limited in a few places due to smooth traffic.
Taxis – comfortable and convenient:
Plan your trip and hire a taxi. You can use a single taxi to travel throughout the day. They’re well proportioned, comfortable and stylish, but cost a few dollars more than any other means of transport. The price of the ticket varies depending on many factors, such as the type of rented vehicle, duration, distance, etc. The passenger must also pay the waiting costs along with the parking fee of the vehicle, if available. Compared to all the modes of transportation mentioned above, hiring a taxi is comfortable and convenient as the services are available 24/7.
Come to Hyderabad and travel around the city – we bet you will definitely enjoy the journey and admire these means of transport that help millions of people reach their destinations every day.
