December Astrology With the Winter Solstice and a Lunar Eclipse

The art and science of astrology is a wonderful mirror for our individual journey, as well as our collective one. Following astrology is a way to deeply explore your human nature and your evolutionary process. Who are you and where are you in your life? A reading with a skilled astrologer is for you a mirror into the hidden aspects of your soul and as a result gives you more awareness and better choices.

Learning the language of astrology for yourself is a never-ending process of deepening your understanding of yourself in conjunction with actualization through transits in your natal chart. There are an endless number of techniques that you can learn and use as mirrors and new perspectives on yourself and all the different areas of your life.

If you look at an astrological reading from time to time, it’s a good leap to broaden your perspective and get out of the box of your own conventional thinking. It also makes a really great Christmas present. Even after 32 years of my astrological practice, I like to do one or two readings a year with someone else to get that unique “another perspective”.

This month of December is intense and more dramatic than usual, and depending on where you land, you might want to consider reading to support your process. If you look at the highlights, you’ll taste a lot of the winter feelings we associate with Capricorn and this time of year.

Astrological highlights of December 2010

  • Mars enters Capricorn on December 7th
  • Mars conjunct the North Node and Pluto in Capricorn from December 11 to 13
  • Mercury goes retrograde from December 10 to 30
  • Lunar eclipse on December 21 at the end of Gemini square Uranus
  • Winter solstice with the entry of the Sun into Capricorn

Mars enters Capricorn on December 7th

Mars, the warrior god, has a lot of action and high tides of energy in the spotlight this month. Mars represents our life force energy, our determination, use of will and focus. It symbolizes our ability to endure challenges with strength and courage. It matches our inner capacity to be a hero and inspires us to take bold action.

And you could say that we have to face various obstacles this month in particular. All the action seems to be happening in Capricorn with Mars conjunct Mercury retrograde, Pluto and the North Node. There is also a Mars square with Uranus on December 3rd and with Saturn on December 29th. Although we won’t go into details, this month seems to be fraught with friction or distress with Mars energy that could turn into hostile or even violent acts or accidents. This can happen for us individually or on a larger, global scale.

Mars conjunct the North Node and Pluto in Capricorn from December 11 to 13

You want to prepare yourself mentally by focusing on higher possibilities and using the potentially volatile energy of Mars like a surfer uses the waves here in Hawaii. The surfer does not fight against the flow of waves, but intuitively familiarizes himself with the special nature and shape of each wave and then rides it with the full enthusiasm of the moment, enjoying every bit of it.

Pluto adds a touch of deep intensity to the energy of Mars and directs us with the North Node into a deeper reality of life and death, realizing the preciousness of each moment in life and where we really want to go with it. It is a call to awaken to your deep inner truth that you are that eternal soul, spirit, incarnated into a human body and experience. You will be motivated to take ownership and responsibility for your life, no matter what, in whatever way you can. You may learn to surrender to life in areas and experiences over which you have no real control. And this is perhaps the most difficult process you can imagine.

Mercury in Capricorn turns retrograde from December 10th to the 30th

We are once again facing Mercury retrograde, which is usually not the best time of year. We face the challenges of communication breakdowns, computers, cars, and electrical devices acting fraudulently, confusion and potential for misunderstandings, and things that just don’t go as expected. At least we have a good excuse. But it’s also a good time to come back and deal with unfinished projects and thoughts, especially while Mercury is still in Capricorn. When he enters the sign of Sagittarius again on December 18, we will feel a little more energy and inspiration for action.

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse December 21st at the end of Gemini square Uranus

A lunar eclipse interrupts the magnetic flux between our planet, the Sun, and the Moon. There are huge opportunities for transformation as old energy networks are dismantled and reloaded to a new level of efficiency. Gemini is a sign that deals with everything related to communication, small trips, writing, teaching, speaking, ideas and knowledge. Uranus carries the spark of the unexpected, as well as an invitation to individualize and grow beyond the boundaries of socially agreed reality. Uranus is the rebel and leader of a new age with new rules and hopefully better, more human ways of supporting each other in like-minded groups and visions.

After this opportunity to step into a new dimension of emotional presence, maturity and walking, our speech is the winter solstice.

Winter Solstice on December 21st with the Sun entering Capricorn the following day

Winter is here. It’s cold and dark outside, maybe you’d like to stay home and cozy up with a blanket, a cup of tea and a good book or movie in the evening. Have you ever seen the movie March of the penguinwith? Antarctica is home to the harshest place on earth, and the moment when the Sun returns from behind the horizon after a long, extremely cold winter is truly magical. It’s a moving, heart-opening film. You can get it on Netflix if you’re on that program.

We are going into that darkest coldest part of the year and our inner soul is turned inward accordingly. We need more physical comfort like warm food and drink, we enjoy meeting friends, snuggling with each other. When I watch German TV with my friend, we sit under one big blanket on the sofa.

Capricorn is the sign of that inner work and dimension that focuses on what is truly important to us and we act accordingly. We take responsibility, work harder and just do what we can. Saturn and Capricorn are associated with the “big job” we commit to doing, which requires a lot of effort, time, and hard work. With all the goings on in Capricorn this month, this is what aligns with the energy.

Ask yourself the question, where in life do you need to go deeper and pay more attention? What needs to be completed this year to feel ready for the New Year with new aspirations and goals? Where have you been procrastinating and procrastinating? Use the energy of Mars in Capricorn and just get started and the momentum will build. I hope you have a wonderful winter solstice in the company of friends and like-minded souls. Use the power of this quality of time to set your intentions for your personal life as well as your prayers for Mother Earth and easy transition to a new level of consciousness raising.

Aloha and many blessings on your journey, Shakti.
