Tig Welding Certification – Tips For Passing Aerospace Welding Tests

Some of you reading this will be taking your first aerospace TIG welding certification test. You may be transitioning from another industry, such as pipe welding, where you welded stainless and carbon steel pipe, or food service, where you welded stainless steel sheet. Anyway, let me give you some tips that might help you prepare:

Everything is thinner and smaller. The tig torch, electrode, charging wire and maybe even the tig welder will be smaller than you are used to. For pipe welding, for example, a 1/8 inch rod is considered a large tig welding rod. In space tig welding, the rod is 1/16 inch in size.

Everything needs to be cleaned better. All joints are usually X-rayed in a space welding certification test. Metals such as titanium, aluminum and magnesium are prone to porosity. Don’t forget the 3 C’s…clean, clean, clean. Grinding the cut edge of the metal to be welded is particularly important. This cut edge looks pretty clean, but is a trap for oil and corrosion products. Invest it, and when you think you’ve invested enough, invest some more.

Everything makes a difference. Little things like the size of your welds, how you place the test plates in the fixture, how much flow is used for the cleaning gas, the angle of the torch, the size of the filler metal rods, what type of abrasive you use to clean the metal, how clean the argon or other shielding gas is. .. you get the picture. As my old coach used to tell me…nothing is fair, but everything matters.

Everything needs to be protected better. The hot tip of the filler rod will introduce oxides into your puddle. You can get away with a little bit of this when welding stainless and mild steel tubing, but it will kill you when you’re welding something like .020″ 15-7 precipitation hardened stainless steel or .032″ inconel 718. For perfect hold rod ends protected, use a tig cup with an inside diameter of at least 3/4 inch. With a diffuser that provides a nice soft blanket of argon that protects the puddle. ..you need to test it on a scrap piece of titanium to make sure it works before lighting it on the tig welding certification plates.

3 more tips for successfully passing your tig welding test in space…

  1. About 1 amp per 1,000 thickness of material being welded will get you in the ballpark. Set the amperage of the tig welder accordingly plus about 10 amps just in case and use the foot pedal to adjust. This way you will avoid problems with the amperage limit. Typically, the penetration required for butt welds will be achieved with 4 times the weld thickness.
  2. Use the smallest electrode that will do the job. And sharpens it really well with scratches that run along the length. long taper works better for very thin (.020″) and less taper is better for thicker welds
  3. Use the smallest filler wire that will work if you need to add too much. An oversized tig welding rod will draw too much heat from the puddle and cause you to draw more amperage than necessary. Too little filler wire will cause you to add too much and not be able to keep up.
