Gardening Tips On How To Buy Healthy And Thriving House Plants

When shopping for houseplants at Lowes, Home Depot, or your local garden center, there are several things to consider. Many people just pick up a houseplant without thinking, especially if the price is low. But think about it, any houseplant you buy can give you years of enjoyment if you properly inspect it before you buy it. Take your time and choose the perfect houseplant. Buying a houseplant on the spur of the moment can result in the destruction of your other houseplants. One rule you should always follow is to never buy plants when you are in a hurry. This is a gardening tip that everyone should follow.

Take the time to inspect the leaves of your houseplant for pests. Aphids, spider mites, and scales will not only destroy these houseplants, but your others as well. And don’t forget to look under the leaves and at the nodes where many pests thrive. Here’s what to look for in your potential houseplant:

Aphids appear as small green or black insects that are usually found on buds and new growth. These insects suck the juices from indoor plants and secrete honeydew.

Mites are small insects that appear as small white spots, usually on the underside of leaves or on the flowers of a houseplant. Mites will form webs like a spider’s web around infected houseplants. Mites will be visible in the mesh as white spots.

Scales look like tiny, brown, oval bumps visible on the leaves and stems of houseplants. The scale is actually a protective covering that protects the insect. Scales produce dew, a clear sticky substance that can be seen on affected houseplants.

You may want to search the Internet for other gardening tips on how to deal with these pests if they happen to infest some of your houseplants.

If the houseplant seems too big for the container, pass it by, it’s probably root bound. Remember that bigger is not necessarily better. I always pull the houseplant out of the container to check the root ball; reputable shops should allow you to do this. If the houseplant is already rooted, you’ll have to open your wallet not only for the plant, but also for potting soil and a new container. Then you have to transplant it and hope it continues to be healthy. If that doesn’t bother you, then by all means buy a houseplant. If you will be repotting, you may want to check out the self-watering containers that are now available. This is great for someone who travels and isn’t around to check on the ground every day.

Inspect the houseplant container for cracks. Make sure the container will coordinate with your existing houseplant containers. Try to buy plants based on shape and height when using houseplants for groups in and around your home. Keep the small tag attached to the plant in a notebook so you always have instructions for the plant’s needs. This is really good gardening advice!

Now you know the secrets of buying spectacular indoor plants.

Happy gardening!
