Planting Annuals in the Fall

Planting annuals for fall and early winter is a fairly new practice. About ten years ago, pansies were reintroduced to gardeners. This old-fashioned plant has since become very popular. Newer varieties have been bred to be more heat tolerant than the pansies your grandmother grew. This extended their season to bloom well into the spring. They do so well that they have changed their spring planting time so that they bloom profusely until the hot weather sets in. Pansies will flower during the warm periods of winter, and established plants will flower profusely when it is still too cold to plant summer annuals. Here in Virginia they bloom until June. Many gardeners, when they see their beds blooming freely, don’t want to lift them to start summer plants, so they will delay spring planting until the pansies begin to fade.

Because of the success of pansies, plant breeders have improved many plant varieties to expand this fall planting phenomenon. Agyranthemum, calibrachoa and osteospermum are all examples of once obscure plants that have moved into mainstream gardening. Perennials such as huechera, with variegated foliage and grasses to add structure, are grouped together in distinctly autumnal plantings. Unlike pansies that survive the winter, these fall annuals are frost hardy and will eventually succumb to freezing temperatures. Because they grow for a shorter time, they are best used in containers where they will create the desired autumn effect.

After following the fall planting process for several years, I found that perennials will re-emerge in the spring and grow the following summer. I have many large containers on the patio; this method makes spring planting quick and easy. When using perennials in containers, I only add a few selected annuals in the spring. I also like the effect of always having a few mature plants in each container, even in early spring. I urge gardeners to plant some of their containers this fall; start where they will have the most impact, such as near doors or on patios. Start looking at each container as a mini garden that continues throughout the year and requires little work in the spring and fall.
