Use a Vortex Koi Filter With Japanese Matting For Superior Pond Filtration
Why are whirlpool pond filters and Japanese mats so successful?
A biological pond filter, regardless of shape or design, is responsible for converting toxic ammonia to nitrate. The decomposition of ammonia requires a lot of oxygen, a filter medium with a high specific surface area for the life of nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter and, last but not least, turbulence. Turbulent conditions promote maximum contact between ammonia, oxygen and nitrifying bacteria, which in turn accelerates the rate of ammonia oxidation.
Whirlpool pond filters were designed this way and when combined with Japanese mats are one of the best koi pond filtration systems available. The homeland of koi and the greatest connoisseurs of this prized ornamental fish are the Japanese. Vortex filtration is widely used in Japan due to its proven efficiency, low maintenance and reliability.
How does a vortex filter work?
A vortex filter must be installed as the primary filtration system before the pond water flows into the biological chamber housing the nitrifying bacteria. As pond water containing particles such as leaves, fish droppings, and decaying organic matter is pumped from the bottom of the pond into the vortex chamber, the swirling of the water causes the waste material to fall to the bottom of the chamber. The sediment is then easily removed by opening the vent valve. The main advantage of this filtration method is its ability to remove the vast majority of waste matter before it can mix with the beneficial nitrifying bacteria that live on the Japanese carpet. This is useful in the following ways:
* All unwanted heterotrophic bacteria that cause water quality and fish health problems are removed from the water before they can contaminate the pond.
* Solid particles have no chance to come into contact with the Japanese mat and therefore cannot clog the openings in the mat, thus maintaining an extremely large surface area.
So far in this article I have discussed the benefits of vortex filtration. However, there are some disadvantages for the average pond keeper with a small to medium size pond, up to 1000 gallons (US):
* Designed for use in large ponds by koi professionals and will likely be too destructive for most smaller ponds. For pond keepers with smaller ponds, I would suggest a pond pressure filter from industry-renowned manufacturers such as Fishmate, Oase or Hozelock, as their pond maintenance products have excellent warranties and have been designed to keep running costs as low as possible.
* They can be expensive to purchase and difficult to install. When installing a vortex filter, it is important to choose a model that matches the flow rate of the pump you need. If you choose a model that is too small for the required pump flow, water containing particles will pass straight through the next stage of filtration. Larger models have longer residence times and therefore provide a much better chance of solid waste settling in the primary vortex chamber where it can be easily removed.
That being said, if you are putting your fish’s health at risk by using an inferior biofilter, then you may want to consider using a professional biofiltration system first. Koi can be very expensive to replace and they are susceptible to stress, unlike their hardier goldfish cousins.
If you are looking for the best Koi pond filtration system available, then the Koi Vortex Filter and Japanese Mat are the options that many professional Koi keepers choose. The design not only removes up to 80% of solids in pond water, but will also remove large amounts of ammonia quickly and easily.
