Great Leadership Requires Inspiration, III

Where do you think inspiration ultimately comes from?

Inspirational leadership – or more of it – is the goal of many of my coaching clients. Managers are increasingly recognizing that command and control is not enough to get the job done these days, when a generation of their teammates is more interested in “having” the job than “doing” the job that the manager remembers to do. reported. years ago. So, since inspirational leadership requires being an inspired person, we talked about how to become more personally inspired.

Without taking you to church (which I promise I won’t do), you should admit that you can’t really openly discuss inspiration without bringing up the fact that the word literally means to fill you with “spirit.” Believe whatever you want and I have no interest in trying to convert you or make you believe what I believe. But I don’t think you can be inspired without at least a small dose of what most people would call “God”.

Is it really God? Look, I don’t pretend to be an expert on spiritual matters. Maybe it’s God… or “Holy” spirit, or divine light, or cosmic truth, or whatever. Paste your label. But whatever it is that really inspires you, I will call it the spirit of God.

In fact, the presence or absence of such a spirit is my measure of whether or not a person—myself included—is actually inspired. I can’t tell from your demeanor – maybe you’re just a happy, energetic person (lucky you!). I can’t tell by your plans and dreams or how well you run your business or execute your personal mission – you may be motivated, very motivated, but still not what I would call truly “inspired.” I can’t say that by the product of your work – for example, I’ve written some good songs that were the fruit of talent…but fewer that combined that talent with true inspiration. I can’t say in terms of your influence on others either – it might be your inspirational leadership, but your team might be doing inspired things more because of what’s inside them than anything you’ve contributed.

But if you consistently deliver all of these things—an upbeat and positive manner, motivated performance, great work products, and driven teams—I’ll bet God has chosen to honor the work you’ve done to prepare for inspiration.

Earlier in this series I talked about how you can make your inner soil more fertile for inspiration to grow. The first part was about developing the art of appreciation as a way to plant the seeds of inspiration. Another talked about habits and behaviors you could use to cultivate your inner garden. But like physical flowers, inspiration in the physical sense cannot be completely controlled. One look at my hanging flower garden last summer would “prove” this – all twelve planters received seeds, good soil, sunlight and regular watering. All were equally exposed to wind, birds and other things that challenge flowering plants. But not all dozens bloomed equally!

Do you see the same effect in your work? You may believe, even correctly, that you have invested equal time, energy and attention in each of your projects. You may even be able to rationalize that their uneven results were due to predictable causes beyond your control. But really, be honest: Couldn’t Mercury’s inspiration be behind at least some of the things that make some endeavors successful and others not so much?

I’ve had clients tell me they want to be more inspirational leaders, but they’ve shown me that they want (perhaps mostly) to cling to the self-image of the top brain, ruled only by logic and thought. There must be some kind of recipe, equation, or secret formula that you can skillfully use to bring them inspiration – and inspirational leadership. Frankly, the most successful such leaders eventually come to realize that there is no such formula and that the self-perception of an automatic smart thinker will not serve them very well as they strive to be more inspirational leaders.

As I say, believe what you want. Even if God does not exist, as some of my clients claim, it is still a good idea to plant seeds and cultivate a garden of inspiration. But if you do all of these things and your honest self-assessment is that you’re the best at it, you might want to rethink your reasons for not believing in God (or whatever you call the Author of True Inspiration). . As your coach, I would not try to lead you to Jesus, but I would certainly advise that you will only get so far in inspirational leadership if you insist on traveling only the path of pure logic.
