A Brief History of Sleeping Bags

Early records of sleeping bags include French customs officers patrolling the Pyrenees mountain passes between Spain and France. These early bags were made of sheepskin for its waterproof properties and lined with wool. The bags had five buckles so they could be rolled up. In the 1950s, Arctic explorers made beds out of a woolen blanket covered with canvas, which was then covered with Mackintosh, a rubberized fabric invented in 1824 by Charles Macintosh (recognizable as today’s raincoat fabric). Another early example of a sleeping bag was used by German farmers in the 1850s. It was a simple strong canvas bag, which was then filled with dry leaves, hay or straw. One of the earliest alpine sleeping bags was tested by Francis Fox Tuckett in 1861. This early bag was made of Mackintosh wool blanket with a rubber bottom. However, Tuckett was not too happy to learn that condensation builds up on the rubber bottom while sleeping, so the design was abandoned. All of these early designs were difficult to get in and out of because they were basically bags to climb into.

The first commercially successful mass-produced sleeping bag was the Euklisia Rug, invented by Pryce Pryce-Jones of Welsh descent. Pryce-Jones, or PJ as he called himself, was apprenticed to a draper at the age of 12 and became the father of a mail-order business. The Euklisia Rug was a wool blanket that was folded in half and tied together, eliminating the inconvenience of climbing into a sack. The carpet also had a sewn-in, inflatable, rubber cushion. The Russian army was the first large order of 60,000 Euclisius carpets and there is information that they were used in the siege of Plevna during the Russo-Turkish War. However, the city fell, leaving Pryce-Jones with 17,000 extra carpets. He added extras to his catalog and advertised them as cheap bedding for charities that cared for the poor. The carpets then began to be used in the British army and the Australian outback. The Euklisia rug was 6 feet 11 inches long and 3 feet 31 inches wide.

The military also participated in the development of mass production of sleeping bags. Military sleeping equipment before the Second World War consisted of five woolen blankets and a sheet for them. Until the beginning of the Second World War, the mountain sleeping bag and the M-1942 model had the shape of a mummy. The mummy shape has become increasingly popular with sportsmen in recent years, and the mummy design was adopted by the military to save weight and space in soldiers’ backpacks and to eliminate the lack of down feathers (it didn’t take as much to fill the mummy shape). The mummy design had the added advantage of more efficient heat retention than the rectangular design. The military sleeping bags also had a full-length zipper that quickly unzips. The M-1942 was later replaced by the M-1949, which was shaped like a mummy and filled with feathers. The M-1949 had a modular design where a waterproof casing could be strapped to the main body of the sleeping bag to provide more warmth and protection from water. In the early 2000s, the military began issuing a modular sleeping system, which we know today as different pads that can be combined to achieve different temperature values.
