Differences Between Bulimia and Anorexia

The two most common eating disorders (usually attributed to women more than men) are anorexia and bulimia. And although the two are very similar, anorexia is more the result of inadequate nutrition, which in turn causes a low calorie intake for the sufferer, while bulimia is when the sufferer vomits shortly after eating, which prevents digestion and absorption of food.

bulimia – (bulimia nervosa) is when the sufferer eats large amounts of food (often too quickly), followed by self-induced vomiting, taking laxatives, stimulants or diuretics, and exercising (before the food can be digested) as a way to eliminate the body’s intake of it.

Although the condition has existed for many years (the first case was recorded by a British psychiatrist in 1979), bulimia is still considered a relatively new disease. And because of this, a lot of data on the prevalence of the disease is still missing, mainly due to the difficulties in detecting the disease in those who have it.

However, the little we know about the disease suggests that it is more likely to be found in women who come from low-income families, athletes, dancers and gymnasts. With the last three attributed to the patient trying to achieve the perfect body.

anorexia – (anorexia nervosa) is a condition in which the sufferer has an abnormal perception of body image, is obsessed with a super thin figure – the result is a fear of gaining weight. This is usually through unreasonable/unhealthy food restriction, which often results in rapid weight loss for the sufferer.

The probability of a woman developing anorexia is estimated to be around 1%, and for a man it is lower at only 0.1%, but this is in the age range between 15 and 20 years for both.

Oddly, anorexia actually means loss of appetite, but anorexics do not have this loss and only appear to have it. Because food intake is usually limited by self-harm.

Similarities between the two –

1. More common in women than men.

2. Bad breath.

3. Cold hands and feet due to fat loss, low blood pressure and poor circulation.

4. Irregular periods.

5. Poor hair growth (telogen effluivium).

6. Poor nail growth, sensitive and painful (paronychia).

7. Severe depression.

8. Skin problems such as: fungal infections on the hands (interdigital intertrigo), itching all over the body (pruritus), rashes, acne, dermatitis, discoloration of the hands, toes and face (acrocyanosis), stretch marks (striea distensea), appearance mottled skin (livedo reticularis) and mouth sores (angular stomatitis).

Differences between the two –

1. Anorexic patients do not eat, but bulimic patients do eat, although bulimic patients try to relieve themselves immediately afterwards (most often by vomiting). The latter does not apply to patients with anorexia.

2. People who suffer from anorexia have the feeling that their body is grossly overweight, but patients with bulimia do not; however, they use extreme methods to achieve the super lean body they desire.
