Can Changing Your Surroundings Change Your Life?

Call it a work/life strategy or just a creative way of decorating. Feng Shui (pronounced “fung shway”) has some interesting ideas that some people swear by. Studies show that people who are unhappy with their physical environment at work or at home are generally unhappy and suffer from high levels of stress. The principles of feng shui suggest positive changes you can make in your work and living space to enliven your life and increase well-being. And the best part is that most of them cost little or nothing. Feng Shui is a 3,000-year-old practice that literally means fire and water. One of its key tenets is the belief that you can influence the flow of energy around you by how you arrange objects in your environment. Some believe that you can achieve an optimal flow of positive energy or “chi” and thereby create harmony and balance and attract happiness and prosperity into your life.

Seems a little New-age to you? You are not alone. But before you decide that Feng Shui is bunk, consider this: most of its principles are based more on common sense than mysticism. Here are some examples.

Clean up the mess

Feng Shui says that by clearing clutter, you allow chi to flow freely, eliminate problems and make way for new and desirable elements. Or, the common sense equivalent is that clutter is distracting, wastes space and time, and frustrates you when you can’t find things. The average CEO spends six weeks each year searching for lost items. In addition, studies show that 80 percent of the papers that are kept and put away are never looked at again.

Move your desk

Feng Shui says that business comes through the door, so it is wrong to turn your back on it. Or, from a common sense standpoint, is it really wise to have your back to the door where you can’t see who’s approaching? Also, sitting with your back to the door can make co-workers feel more isolated from you.

Adjust the lighting

Feng Shui says that inadequate or inadequate lighting represents an obstacle to chi. Common sense says that poor lighting at work or at home causes eye strain, fatigue and other eye problems. Adjustable lighting is the best solution. However, if you are dealing with ceiling fluorescents, ask if some bulbs can be removed to reduce intensity and glare.

Reconsider the color of the wall

Feng Shui says that color can drive away negative energy and encourage positive energy. Or, looking at common sense, workplace designers generally agree that sunny tones make employees feel cheerful, while dark colors create gloom.

Here is what Feng Shui says about colors:

The Chinese believe that the color red brings good luck, so many Chinese paint their front doors red. Pinks, purples and plums are also believed to bring good luck.

Green is the color of peace, growth and freshness, an ideal color for the bedroom.

As yellow is the color of the sun, it is believed to cause longevity.

Excessive use of white is said to bring too much “cold energy”. The Chinese like to break up the white with touches of color like flowers.

Two more quick Feng Shui points:

  • Believers say that a green leafy plant in a red pot brings monetary gain.
  • And placing a healthy plant or crystal bowl in the upper left corner of the table is said to attract wealth, as this is your “wealth quadrant”.

Whether you believe in Feng Shui or not, you have to admit that occasional changes are a good way to liven up your day and give you a new perspective.
