Optimizing Online Forms With Google Analytics Goal Funnels

So your site has a contact/subscribe/purchase form and the conversion rate for completing your forms is low. What should a webmaster / online marketer do?

I ran into this problem recently and realized that other sites may have a similar problem. Fortunately, Google Analytics has a great feature called funnels that can follow users through the funnel process and put them in an easy-to-read funnel diagram. If you want to take advantage of targeted funnels, we’ll need to take a few steps to get GA to start tracking your forms.

There’s another GA feature we’re going to use to bring this all together and it’s called Virtual Pageviews (VP). VPs allow you to trigger the generation of page views on a page so that you can see that event or action in your content reports within GA. You will want to add an “onclick” javascript function for the form elements on the page to trigger the generation of the mock pageview.

Here’s an example of a standard field you’ll find on the form:

To trigger virtual pageviews for this field, you’ll change your code like this:

You will notice the “/signup_form/email” part of this code. This piece of code is what you will call a virtual page. I chose something that describes the event I’m following. You can name yours whatever you want. I could have called it “signupform_email” as well, but instead I used a slash to separate the category and label. You’ll also want to do this for the submit button.

After you modify the form with the code to track all virtual pageviews, you will need to return to the reporting interface and specify your goal. Select Destination URL for the Target Type, select “Header Match” for the Match Type, and enter your virtual pageview path in the Target URL field. So if you created something like:

You’ll want to enter “/signup_form/submission” in the URL field in the destination definition. Next, you’ll want to add a destination stream.

Make sure your first funnel step has the “required” box checked so that users must complete at least the first funnel step to count as a conversion. You will enter your virtual pageview URLs in each field.

When you’re done, you’ll be able to see how many users go through EACH step of the form, where they leave, where they go, and how many complete the form.
