Ever since Benjamin Franklin flew his kite and nearly blew himself up with the resulting lightning, we’ve been trying to figure out exactly how lightning works. Lightning discharge is probably one of the most impressive phenomena in the atmosphere, but surprisingly, despite years of study, the exact process is still shrouded in some mystery.

Lightning is the result of the accumulation of opposite electric charges in a cloud. Ice crystals that form in the upper part of the cloud are usually positively charged, and water droplets that descend in the lower part of the cloud are usually negatively charged. The ice crystals appear to be positively charged due to collisions in the storm vortex with warmer water droplets. When the warmer drop hits the ice crystal, it passes on its positive charge and as a result the water drop is now negatively charged.

Okay, so as the storm now tracks over land, it’s positively charged in the upper reaches and negatively charged in the lower reaches. Because opposite charges attract, the positive charge now builds up on the surface of the earth directly below the storm. However, air is an excellent insulator and prevents these charges from coming together to begin with. However, as the potential difference between cloud and land increases, eventually the inevitable happens and the air can no longer hold negative electrons and a process known as “stepped conductor” occurs.

A ‘step leader’ follows a sequence of steps. Electrons do not flow uniformly and continuously, but in a more irregular series of steps, as follows:

1. Electrons wave down toward the ground at 14,000 mph for about 200-300 feet.

2. Electrons stop for fifty millionths of a second.

3. They travel again for another 150-200 feet

4. Positive ions begin to rise from the ground from any protruding object such as a tree or a golfer

5. When they meet, a huge electric current flows, carrying positive ions into the cloud.

These ions are transported through a channel a few centimeters wide, and as they move upward, they shine bright enough for us to see. Like a giant spark, lightning travels up into the cloud so fast that it is impossible to tell whether it is traveling up or down. Your typical flash will consist of about 4 leads and 4 return strokes, which are indistinguishable from the familiar flash.

Lightning is incredibly hot, five times hotter than the surface of the Sun at 30,000 degrees Celsius.

As a result, the air around the lightning expands in an explosion that creates a huge shock wave. This shock wave travels across the sky like the sound of thunder.

Since sound travels very slowly compared to light, you can calculate how far lightning is by measuring the time between the flash and the thunder. They are about half a mile apart every 3 counted seconds. But beware…the lightning strike danger zone is within 6 miles of the storm!
