Trial Showing the Effect of Rust on an Electric Fence Post

An effective electric fence is highly dependent on an effective electrical circuit, which includes the section that goes from the animal through the ground to the ground pole and then back to the power supply. This then completes the circuit and causes a shock, which is the effective part of the fence – it convinces the target not to play with that fence.

Obviously there are factors that inhibit this power transfer, poor foot contact with the ground, the horse wearing a blanket, among others, but the main element we looked at is the ground toe component. Many installers simply use a piece of mild steel lying around, hammer it into the ground and connect it to the circuit. This is fine at first, but the steel is affected by the chemicals in the soil and eventually a layer of rust will form between it and the soil. Rust is a natural phenomenon when certain metals are exposed to oxygen and water for a long time. The actual chemical composition of rust is 4Fe + 3O2 = 2Fe2O3.

This rust is a poor conductor of electricity, so the ability to transmit electricity decreases with the formation of rust. This rust formation is dictated by the availability of both water and air, and can also be accelerated by other factors such as heat (steel rod rusts faster in warm earth) and the presence of electricity. When you have two different metals (a metal rod and other metals commonly found throughout the earth) in an electrical environment, a battery is actually created. This environment allows for the rapid transfer of electrons and thus the rapid formation of rust on the surface of the metal rod that you intend to use for your electric fence.

Testing of the effect of a mild steel rod in an electric fence has been completed. Two parameters were used:-

1. Power supply connected to ground but switched on only for reading, actually testing the natural rusting of the metal rod.

2. Power supply connected to ground and permanently on. This would be the other end of the scale with power constantly flowing in the circuit.

The transmission of electricity was measured at regular intervals over a period of 40 months and the resistance between the ground and the earth pole was measured. The constant current column lost 46% of its load capacity over this period, while the steering lost 17% over the same period

From this it is easy to see the effect of electricity on an ordinary mild steel rod used as an electrical ground. It is important to use galvanized steel, stainless steel or copper material to ground the electric fence.

Grounding makes up 50% of an electrical circuit, but 90% of all problems stem from poor grounding, either on the ground pole itself or on the fence. Fortunately, this is easy to fix. Additional ground stakes for electric fences can be added by driving them into the ground about 2m away from the existing stake and tying them together. Copper, stainless steel, or galvanized steel rods are best, as mild steel rusts and creates a poor conductive barrier. All sticks should be in permanently moist soil, under an eaves, in a riverbed, under a eaves or in an irrigated bed. In particularly dry weather, the soil around the stakes can be watered.
