Types Of Losses Occured In A Transformer

Because we have limited resources in terms of population and there is a gap between the demand for energy and the actual supply of it, which is increasing day by day. To bridge the gap, a device called a transformer is used for heavy-duty applications to transmit and distribute electricity in an efficient and effective manner. Because it is an electrical device and we know that there is no electronic device that has zero loss and is 100% usable. In short, there is no electrical device that has the same input power as output.

The losses that occur in all electrical equipment can be controlled by some effective methods. Transformer is the most efficient electrical device widely used in all industries. Since it has no moving parts, it has good efficiency compared to rotary machines. Four types of losses occur during the use of transformers:

  • Core Loss – When cyclic magnetization occurs in the transformer core, power loss occurs. This loss is called core loss, which can be divided into two subcategories – hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. This is constant and important for determining the heating, temperature rise, rating and efficiency of the device. The total core loss is the sum of hysteresis loss and eddy current loss.
  • Loss of copper – Undoubtedly, resistance in the flow of current in a conductor is the main cause of power loss. This occurs due to resistance in the conductors and takes place in the winding of the device due to the resistance of the coil. When current flows through the winding, there is a loss due to internal resistance. In scientific terms, loss is proportional to the square of the current flowing through the transformer windings.
  • Load Loss – Leakage fields and eddy current loss in the tank wall and conductors cause load loss. The device winding is designed to prevent this type of loss and keep it to a minimum. You can reduce it by dividing the conductors into small strips.
  • Dielectric loss – The insulating materials and transformer oil of the device are the main cause of such losses. This happens due to the first two types of losses in the device and has the main share in the total loss.

Out of all four, the first two, i.e. core loss and copper loss, the most common and constant type of loss.
